MARLENE DUMAS

"I see teaching as a very important thing, and not only because I teach them things, but also because we have a dialogue, and you see what you really want. You find things out."

"The worst kind of artist is one who thinks they're so wonderful because they don't understand that there have been all these wonderful things done already, and that you exist in relation to that. Just because an artist from the past is dead doesn't mean the work is dead. Art is something that relates you to the past, and hopefully to the present as well. "

"My best works are erotic displays of mental confusions.. with intrusions of irrelevant information."

"Painting doesn't freeze time. It circulates and recycles time like a wheel that turns. Those who were first might well be last. Painting is a very slow art. It doesn't travel with the speed of light. That's why dead painters shine so bright."

Marlene Dumas works from photos, the same like Gerhard Richter and many other contemporary artists, and she's not afraid to recognize it. What I find different at her, is the life she gives back to these photos. Her portraits are full of emotion, and say so much more than the images themselves.
