The art of an artist must be his own art. It is... always a continuous chain of little inventions, little technical discoveries of one's own, in one's relation to the tool, the material and the colors.

Pure emotion, passion and surprise from the beginning till the end. I expected a good movie and I saw a great movie, as I haven't seen in years. I fell in love with each of the persoanges and I laughed and cried with each of them.
Radu Mihaileanu took a few cliches about Russians, added up the music of Tchaikovsky and transformed everything into a masterpiece. I expected a movie in French but the director understood the importance of Russian language, also the French spoken by Russians is "delicious". I hope to see more movies from this Romanian director who has lived in France since 1980. He still has his soul in Eastern Europe, this is the place where he draws all his passion and subjects from.

I watched yesterday Breaking the Waves of Lars von Trier. From the beginning I felt like the director wanted to tell us something was wrong, but what? Was it too much love, or too much faith? Or maybe it was too much "kindness", the way Bess' doctor called it? Whatever it was, I was completely taken by this film, and I am not going to tell you more to not spoil everything. One of the best roles of Emily Watson, the acting of everyone actually, made me feel like I was practically there, it is still haunting me. Bess reminds me a bit of the Meek One, a gentle soul, of Dostoyevsky and at the same time she is a bit of a Jeanne D'Arc, same strong faith taken till the end.
The Quiet American (Un American linistit) is about the war horrors but not only, it is about love, innocence and beauty opposite to violence, brutality and evil. Michael Caine is brilliant in the role of the old reporter in love with the young Phuong (Do Thi Hai Yen), who is so beautiful that every image with her looks like a Rennaisance painting. At the other end is young Pyle (Brendan Fraser), who is the perfect American who wants to save the world destroying it first.
